Markos Vamvakaris Museum began operating in 1995, twenty-three years after the February that the voice of the teacher of rebetiko silenced in Nikaia of Piraeus.   The idea for the creation of it had been captured long time before, a road in Apano Chora got his name and in 1987 a square was constructed with his statue to honor the great troubadour and composer, who was born in Ano Syros in 1905 and who became known in Greece and abroad with rebetika songs, especially the 'Frangosyriani. It is an old two-storey house on the main street of Apano Chora, Saint Sebastian street 3, which was renovated to accommodate the personal belongings of Marcos Vamvakaris. Friends of Markos will see in the museum, photographs and personal memorabilia, the passport that didn’t managed to use, his identity, clothing and shoes (Markos loved shoes – he had about 50 pairs) manuscripts, his ring and watch, tools (pliers, knives, etc.) that held when he had not embrace the bouzouki, even some very personal items that were granted by the family. The Municipality of Syros Hermoupolis has the ambition, through the museum, to make even more famous, the life and art of Markos Vamvakaris, presenting an excellent scope for research and even to undermine some characterizations such as "Song of Tekes's and prison” and some theories about the history of rebetiko.  The Museum is open from the 1st of June till the end of September daily from 11 am to 14.00 p.m and from 19.00 pm to 22.00 p.m. For more information please contact at 22813 60914
