La Ponta, a 13th century tower, is located within the Venetian castle (Kasteli) of Akrotiri, 1km above the pre-historic archaeological site of Akrotiri, Santorini. The tower hosts atsabouna - Greek folk wind instrument of the bagpipe family - exhibition and workshop along with traditional Greek percussion and flutes.
Daily guided tours explore the history of the tower, the origin of the tsabouna and offer a live presentation of the instruments.
Help us restore the tower and support Cultural Tourism at the "Restoration Donation Cafe". Savour a beverage on the tower terrace while overlooking a panoramic view of the island and the ancient vineyard below.
As part of our effort to promote the cultural identity of Greece La Ponta presents theevening concert series "Sounds from the Castle". Summer 2014, every Tuesday and Friday from June 17th and for the months of July, August and September.
The Greek Bagpipe Exhibition
The exhibition encompasses tsabounas constructed by most of the recognized makers of the Cyclades, Dodecanese and Crete. Also the exhibition includes vintage instruments from Santorini.The emphasis of this collection is the Aegean style of the tsabouna and moreover the technical differences of each region.This one of a kind collection displays the various traditional techniques used by the makers of the Aegean.
