Did you know that ...
Melimilon Honey = aplle + honey = apple jam in ancient Greece
The roots of the jam can be found in Ancient Greece, where it was known as "melimilon": from "honey" (as sweetening substance and maintenance) and "apple" (the word "apple" in antiquity represented all fruits) .
The first jams were prepared by boiling honey and quince, so it could be saved for longer periods. The formula adopted by the Romans and established as "melimelum". During the 10th century, the Portuguese replaced honey with sugar and prepared the marmelada from "marmelo", quince in Portuguese. So jam acquires its current form. Quickly becomes famous in Spain, France and England. In the 18th century the "Orange Seville" replaced the quince and became synonymous with jam. Over time, the recipe was tested with other fruit, depending on the production each country had. Today, jams are made in a wide variety of fruits and flavors and have a seat at our table and preferences.
