The fortress of Ithomi was an important protective barrier for the region of Messinia in antiquity. Its construction dates back to the Peloponnesian War, when the Spartans were trying to expand their influence in the region. The fortress remained in operation until the Roman period, when it played an important role in protecting the region from raids.
Today, visitors can visit the impressive ruins of the fort and enjoy the magnificent view of the Messinian Gulf. The surroundings are very beautiful and ideal for hiking, as there are many paths leading to the top of the mountain. Mavromati is a picturesque village on the mountainside, worth visiting to enjoy the local atmosphere and traditional cuisine.
