Thesprotia is one of the four regional units of the Region of Epirus, located at the northwestern tip of Greece, with Igoumenitsa as its capital and largest city.
Geography & Morphology
Area: It covers a total of 1,515 square kilometers.
Terrain: The region is heavily mountainous, with 70% of the land classified as mountainous, 24.7% as semi-mountainous, and only 5.3% as flat.
Mountains: The dominant peaks are the Tsamantas Mountains (1,896 m), the Souli Mountains (1,815 m), and the Paramythia Mountains.
Rivers: It is crossed by the Kalamas River and the mythical Acheron River, which in antiquity was considered the gateway to the Underworld.
Borders: It borders Albania to the north, the Ioannina Regional Unit to the east, the Preveza Regional Unit to the south, and is washed by the Ionian Sea to the west.
Tourism & Attractions
Syvota: A coastal settlement known as the "Riviera of Epirus," famous for its lush green islets and beaches with turquoise waters (e.g., Bella Vraka, Pisina).
Perdika: A picturesque area featuring the impressive beaches of Karavostasi and Arillas.
Historic Souli: A mountainous region of immense historical significance due to the resistance of the Souliotes during Ottoman rule.
Archaeological Sites: Notable sites include Gitana (the ancient political center of Thesprotia), ancient Elina (Dymokastro), and Titani.
