Kalavrita and their indomitable beauty

Built at a height of 735 m., In the Aroania Mountains, Kalavrita is a reference point for many visitors. This small town in the prefecture of Achaia, in addition to the natural beauty that surrounds it, has a great historical background as it was one of the most famous places of martyrdom in Greece during World War II.

Due to their central location, Kalavrita can be considered as one of the most accessible destinations, as it is only 2.5 hours away from Athens. This is one of the reasons why the town has developed radically in at least three decades and the local community has made the most of its natural and cultural wealth. The Great Cave and the Monastery of Agia Lavra are two of the main religious attractions of the area, as in the second it is said that it was the place where the Greek revolution was started by the German of Old Patras.

Due to the high altitude, Kalavrita is mainly a favorite winter destination. Activities such as snowboarding, snowmobile and skiing are provided at the ski resort, 14 km from the settlement. Visitors can also admire the natural wealth by touring around the famous Vouraikos gorge on foot or through the pristine, thus enjoying the wild and unsurpassed beauty of the area. It should not be omitted, that at the top of Mount Helmos, at an altitude of 2,340m. There is also the telescope of the National Observatory of Athens "Aristarchos", which is the largest in the Balkans.

Although most of the families in the area had lost one or more relatives in the Holocaust to the Nazi Germans, it did not deter them. The people of Kalavrita, more hospitable than ever, put all their fun and passion by creating tasteful hostels, luxury hotels, traditional restaurants and taverns to welcome travelers who come to know a part of their place and history.
